Carol McCabe Booker: Cove Point on the Chesapeake (with Veterans for Peace)

This April, the state of Maryland and city of Baltimore will be honored by a visit of the historic peace sailboat The Golden Rule. This boat was originally owned by a group of Quakers who in 1958 planned to sail it into the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific, in an attempt to stop the testing of atomic weaponry in that region. Although The Golden Rule never managed to fulfill its original mission, having been intercepted and turned back by the US Coast Guard, the boat continues to this day, under the auspices of Veterans For Peace.
This event at The Ivy Bookshop will celebrate the spirit of The Golden Rule. Author Carol McCabe Booker will join crew members from The Golden Rule to chat together about the dangers and damages of nuclear weapons and power plants, and fracked gas/methane liquifaction/export facilities.

Carol McCabe Booker, Former Greenpeace General Counsel, is the author of Cove Point on the Chesapeake, about the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant and the Cove Point fracked gas export facility in dangerous proximity to each other in southern Maryland. The Golden Rule will have sailed past these 2 polluting and dangerous sites and will bring photos doing so.

Helen Jaccard, A non-veteran member of Veterans For Peace and Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom. She has been the VFP Golden Rule peace boat’s Project Manager and a crew member on the Golden Rule for 8 years. Helen also writes about the Environmental Cost of War & Militarism.

Gerry Condon, The President of the Golden Rule steering Committee, a crew member, and past President of Veterans For Peace. He refused orders to Vietnam in 1969 and spent 6 years in Sweden and Canada supporting other deserters, then later supported GIs who had been to Iraq and Afghanistan and refused to return.

Captain Kiko Johnston-Kitazawa, A 4th generation boat builder who has sailed since he was a boy. He has captained the Golden Rule for many months, starting in his native Hawaii and the voyage back to California, then several months along the Great Loop. Kiko has a unique perspective on nuclear weapons and has been against them his whole life.
